Queen's Centre for Business Venturing

Our vision is to become the leading and definitive source of knowledge and expertise in the creation, leadership and management of new ventures. We will accomplish this through five major areas of activity:

One Embed new venture thinking and preparedness in our curriculum by offering mandatory entrepreneurship courses on all our programs, as well as a slate of elective courses including one that provides students the opportunity to invest monies from our Tricolour Venture Fund
Two Provide access to a variety of pools of capital to fund new venture, including several business plan competitions
Three Conduct applied research in the field of business venturing, with a focus on managing growth and private equity
Four Broker knowledge and relationships within the broader new venture community and act a hub for these
Five Influence key decision makers within organizations that play in the entrepreneur’s domain, including key government bodies

  • Fully 95% of our nations's businesses employ fewer than 50 people
  • Of all Canadians employed in the private sector, 36% work for companies with no more than 50 employees
  • An increasing proportion of Canada's GDP - 43% - is driven by newer entrepreneurial businesses
  • Nearly 70% of all new ventures fail within 5 years, most often because of poor management

With our long history of innovation, we view it as our responsibility at Queen's School of Business to be at the forefront of tackling the challenge of understanding the key success factors for entrepreneurial ventures, and translating these into long-term sustainability and growth for these important enterprises. Queen's Centre for Business Venturing is committed to these ends.
