Term Adjunct Position

Income Taxation - COMM 319

A Term Adjunct Teaching Position is open in Queen's School of Business for an instructor to teach in an on-campus, lecture-type undergraduate course in the Commerce Program.  The course is COMM 319 - Income Taxation and is a winter-term course for fourth year Commerce students, being offered from September 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.  The successful applicant will be required to teach 100 % of one section of COMM 319. Anticipated enrollment in each section of COMM 319 is 60 - 80 students.

The course is described as follows:   Taxes and business decisions interact with each other, affecting managers personally as well as the firms they work for. The main theme of the course is that managerial tax planning is part of the practice of management; it is part of the question of how to set up a business and chart its investment, financing and compensation strategies. The objective is to apply this perspective to domestic and international topics such as the choice of business entities, tax arbitrage, financial markets, compensation planning, business combinations, foreign investment and personal tax planning.

Qualifications include a PhD, an MBA, prior relevant teaching experience and relevant industry experience, or a combination of the above.  As this position will entail the teaching of one course section, together with office hours to meet with students, the incumbent will be expected to be on campus a minimum of two days a week during the teaching term.  The deadline for applications is February 1st, 2012.

Accounting Theory - COMM 318

A Term Adjunct Teaching Position is open in Queen's School of Business for an instructor to teach in an on-campus, lecture-type undergraduate course in the Commerce Program.  The course is COMM 318 - Accounting Theory and is a winter-term course for fourth year Commerce students, being offered from January 1, 2013 to April 30, 2013.  The successful applicant will be required to teach 100 % of one section of COMM 318. Anticipated enrollment in each section of COMM 318 is 60 - 80 students.

The course is described as follows: This course examines the main issues in contemporary financial accounting theory and research, drawing on such areas as managerial economics, information theory, and agency theory. The emphasis is on active seminar participation and self-directed research, though approximately half of the class time is given to lectures. Some of the topics covered vary from year to year, depending on what are the most pressing current issues. They may include: theory of income and capital; markets for auditing services; effect of accounting information on capital markets; managers' selection of accounting procedures; standard-setting; structure and governance of the accounting profession; ethics and accounting for environmental externalities; inflation accounting; international comparison of the bases for accounting principles; and selected topics such as deferred taxes or pension accounting.

Term Adjunct Position

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING - MBAS 811

A Term Adjunct Teaching Position is open in Queen's School of Business for an instructor to teach two (2) on-campus, lecture-type graduate course in the Full-Time MBA Program.  The course is MBAS 811 - Financial Accounting and is a summer term course being offered from June 19th, 2012 to July 17th, 2012.  The successful applicant will be required to teach 100 % of two sections of MBAS 811. Anticipated enrollment in each section is 60 students per section.

The course is described as follows:

This course focuses on the fundamentals of accounting and provides an understanding of how financial decisions are made. Topics include the role of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in accounting statements, and the key accounting statements (balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement). The course examines concepts such as retained earnings, depreciation, receivables, inventory, amortization, deferred taxes, and goodwill.

Qualifications include a PhD degree in financial accounting, prior relevant teaching experience and relevant industry experience, or a combination of the above.  As this position will entail the teaching of two course sections, together with office hours to meet with students, the incumbent will be expected to be on campus five days a week during the term of this course.  The deadline for applications is February 14th, 2012.
