CIBC Donation
April 07, 1999
from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) towards the development of a new
program to improve the success of Canadian small enterprises in the growing high-tech sector.
Queen's will use the donation to develop courses to prepare students to lead new enterprises
-- especially new knowledge-based businesses in the high-tech sector -- and to foster
research and build linkages with Canadian entrepreneurial enterprises.
"With CIBC's support, Queen's School of Business will help burgeoning enterprises advance
successfully, as well as prepare our students for leadership positions in the
knowledge-intensive businesses which drive the Canadian economy today," said Dr. Margot
Northey, Dean of Queen's School of Business at today's announcement in Kingston,
attended by representatives from CIBC, the City of Kingston and Queen's University.
"CIBC has an ongoing commitment to supporting the development of entrepreneurs," said
Anne Cira, Senior Vice President, Youth Strategy Team at CIBC. "Through hard work,
perseverance and courage, entrepreneurs turn ideas and dreams into reality, and we applaud
Queen's for creating an innovative program to help make this happen."
This new initiative at Queen's School of Business is linked to the recently-announced Centre
for Managing Knowledge-Based Enterprises -- which Queen's is creating for research
specifically targeted at improving the success of businesses in the competitive and growing
knowledge-based sector. The increasing focus on knowledge-based businesses at Queen's
School of Business exemplifies its record of developing innovative programs for the leaders of
tomorrow.
Queen's School of Business currently offers the following programs: the Queen's MBA for
Science & Technology, ranked #1 for two consecutive years by Canadian Business magazine;
the revamped undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce -- "BCom-plus" -- with the highest
entrance standards in Canada and a 100% success rate in placing students in the job market;
the market-leading Executive MBA program, Canada's first MBA delivered by videoconference
to sites from coast to coast; and Queen's Executive Development Centre, Canada's most
popular university-level executive training facility.
CIBC has a long history of supporting communities across Canada and around the world. In
1998, it invested more than $26 million in corporate donations and sponsorships, entrenching
CIBC's position as one of Canada's largest corporate donors.
