McKeen wins Research Excellence Award
December 05, 2001
2001-12-05 - It's been a Queen's School of Business tradition since 1988: the School's top researcher is presented with the Research Excellence Award in recognition of achievement in business research. This year's recipient, Dr. James McKeen, was unable to attend the official award presentation - he was in Massachusetts, working on his research.
The award recognizes Dr. McKeen's extensive track record and position as a premier() researcher in the application of management information systems in business and industry. The author of an award winning book, Management Challenges in IS: Successful Strategies and Appropriate Action, Dr. McKeen is also a widely published contributor to the International Journal of Management Reviews, Journal of Information Technology Management, MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, and Information and Management, among many others. He has been a featured columnist for Ernst & Young's IT Management Issues and served as MIS editor for the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. Dr. McKeen earned his M.Sc. in Computing and Information Science from Queen's, and his Ph.D., majoring in Management Information Systems, from the University of Minnesota.
Currently a Visiting Research Scholar at the Institute of Knowledge Management in Cambridge, Mass., Dr. McKeen is on sabbatical from Queen's School of Business and his dual role as a professor, and the Director of Queen's Centre for Knowledge-Based Enterprises. The KBE Centre has an active research agenda and under Dr. McKeen's leadership, has led the way in researching the management of knowledge-based enterprises. "The KBE Centre has proven to be a perfect fit for me," says Dr. McKeen "Much of what is happening in the field of knowledge management relates directly to changes in technology. This brings me back to my roots, my first love, which is Information Technology. Specifically, how technology can be used to leverage peoples' skills in the workplace."
Dr. McKeen is making the most of his time at the Institute for Knowledge Management. "There are nearly 50 universities, think tanks and institutes in the Boston area," Dr. McKeen explains. "From my window, I can see Cap Gemini Ernst & Young's Center for Business Innovation, Accenture's Research Institute, the Monitor Group, Boston University and MIT. The amount and breadth of research that is going on here is quite extraordinary, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."
In addition to finishing his upcoming book, Dr. McKeen also continues to work closely with Larry Prusak, a world leader in the field of knowledge management and Executive Director of the Institute in Cambridge. In February, Dr. McKeen takes part in Braintrust International 2002, in San Francisco. He will join Mel Goodes, former CEO of Warner-Lambert, and principal benefactor of Queen's Centre for Knowledge-Based Enterprises, in a keynote presentation at this prestigious international forum.
