Queen's Commerce Students Reach Finals of International Business Case Competition

December 02, 2005

The invitation-only event, held at the University of Texas at Austin from October 25-29, included teams from 20 universities in North America, Europe, and Asia. Queen’s School of Business team included Patrick Lufty, Elaine Lae, Andrew Mannik and car guru Victor Mussi.
This year's competition featured a case study on Ford Motor Company. Teams were given 60 hours to analyse the challenges currently facing Ford and provide strategy for the next three years and present their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges including executives from Dell, Ford, and General Electric and Pacesettle Consulting.

The students slept for only ten hours and continually said that "this is the hardest thing I have ever done!".

Participating for the seventh time in the International Business Competition, Queen’s School of Business has now become the university to reach the most final rounds. The QSB team gave a stellar performance in the preliminary rounds, winning out over Harvard, University of Florida, University of Indiana and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.

In the final round, renowned for its aggressive judging and high calibre of competition, Queen’s was matched against teams from Concordia University, Georgetown and Washington State. The team came up with a diesel strategy that made selecting a winner very difficult. The judges only select one winner and three finalists but from the mouth of one judge Queen’s was a definite second place finisher.

They poured themselves into this case and are probably still dreaming about diesel engines and Ford Motor Company. We couldn’t be more proud of how these students represented Queen’s School of Business.

The team would like to thank Peter Kissick, Csop Glew, Nicole Beckerton, Gary Bissonette, Doug Reid, John Phelan, Eric Leblanc and Steve Sottile for all their help in preparing for the competition.
