March 26, 2007 — Queen’s School of Business has established a scholarship in memory of Dr. Shirley Taylor, associate professor and Distinguished Faculty Research Fellow in Marketing, who passed away peacefully February 13, 2007.
Dr. Taylor’s career at Queen’s School of Business began in 1990 after graduating from the University of British Columbia. She contributed significantly to the field of marketing, particularly the area of services marketing. She shared her considerable expertise with many beyond Queen’s while serving on the review boards of several leading journals. She was universally acclaimed as a constructive and insightful reviewer. Her 2003 article, "Big R (Versus Little R) Reviewers: The Anonymous Coauthor" published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science has become a standard guiding others in this important task. In 2005 the culmination of her research accomplishments resulted in her being named a Distinguished Faculty Research Fellow in Marketing at Queen’s School of Business.
Through collaboration with other Queen’s faculty members, Dr. Taylor also advanced the theory of management information systems. The Taylor and Todd (1995) article published in Information Systems Research remains one of the ten most frequently cited articles in the information systems field today. Her enthusiasm for research and openness to new ideas allowed her to cross easily from one discipline to the other.
Dr. Taylor shared her passion for marketing and research with her students. She was nominated for the Commerce Society’s Teaching Excellence Award in multiple years for her classes in marketing research and services marketing. She was also a dedicated supervisor of graduate students and her former students have gone on to be valued faculty members at such places as Memorial University, Wilfrid Laurier University, and HEC Montreal. Her mentorship and unwavering support helped to guide the careers of junior faculty members at Queen’s and universities across the country.
Students and faculty benefited tremendously from Dr. Taylor’s friendship, mentorship and many talents during the 17 years that she was a faculty member at Queen’s School of Business. Her presence in Goodes Hall will be greatly missed. To view lovely photos of Dr. Shirley Taylor, please click here.
