January 16, 2008
KINGSTON, ON – Some of the brightest undergraduate business minds from universities across Canada and Asia competed in the 30th annual Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) this weekend. Hosted by Queen’s School of Business Commerce students in Kingston, Ontario, ICBC is the oldest and largest undergraduate business case competition of its kind in Canada — striving to unite, challenge and enrich the business leaders of tomorrow.
To qualify for ICBC, students must first compete in a preliminary inter-university round, held in November, in one of eight disciplines: Accounting, Business Policy, Debating, Ethics, Finance, Labour Arbitration, Marketing, and Management Information Systems (MIS). Winning teams then come to Kingston to show off their case analysis skills and present to a panel of judges comprised of industry representatives and members of the national news media. The 2008 ICBC winners are:
- University of Calgary won the top spot in five out of eight disciplines: Accounting, Finance, Business Policy, Ethics and Labour Arbitration.
- Wilfred Laurier placed first in Marketing and Debating, and also took home the Chairperson’s Award for most school spirit.
- University of Manitoba was first in Management Information Systems
This year teams from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore joined 17 Canadian teams in the competition.
Several ICBC event alumni came out to help celebrate the competition’s 30th anniversary, including the first co-chair of ICBC, Geoffrey Arnoldi (BCom’79), and Alex Faseruk, Memorial University, an ICBC faculty advisor and Arnoldi Award winner for long-time support and dedication to the competition.
