Information for interested students

Eligibility criteria

You are at a minimum:

  • A Third year student in good academic standing
  • Canadian OR US citizen
  • Eligible to travel and work outside of Canada
  • Available to work in Asia for a minimum of 6 weeks

An ideal candidate is:

  • A student who has little or no personal connection with the target internship region
  • On exchange in a region in proximity to the proposed internship city

Here’s how to get started:

Step 1 – Pre-approval*

Submit a current resume and cover letter to Tracey Mallen, Program Manager. The cover letter should summarise each of the following:

  • Each of the above eligibility criteria and how you meet each criteria
  • Why this internship would be beneficial to you and why you want to participate
  • Your strategy for securing a sponsoring company

Once you receive your pre-approval from Tracey, you may move on to the following step...

Step 2 – Securing an Internship Opportunity

Once you are pre-approved, you may then proceed to secure, in principle, an internship with a sponsoring company. QSB may post some potential company sponsors on this website but understand that you are responsible for securing your own internship opportunity.

Step 3 – Submit your formal application package.  No submissions will be accepted after March 16, 2012

Once you have an internship opportunity lined up, in collaboration with and on behalf of the sponsoring company, you would submit a formal application that includes the following material:

  • Student information section
    • Your Name
    • Your student number
    • Your contact info
    • Direct deposit information
    • Student academic program summary
    • Student Work/Travel Visa status
      • Summary statement
      • In what areas do you need assistance
  • Proposed Internship Information
    • Inclusion of the internship approval material required from the Company (see above)
    • A summary of email correspondence with the key company contact including a final email from the company confirming a pre-approved start date and end date of internship
  • Anticipated Transportation Plans
    • Summary of confirmed/anticipated plans for getting to internship destination
    • Summary of confirmed/anticipated plans for returning to Kingston after internship
  • Anticipated Living Arrangements
    • Summary of confirmed/anticipated plans for accommodation at the internship location

Please note the following:

  • All student application packages will be processed at the same time
  • All file material, including the completed application package, must be in PDF format and must be emailed to Tracey Mallen for processing
  • Tracey will work with all applicants to ensure their file is complete
  • Tracey will advise students of any changes to the status (e.g. pending, approved) of their application file
  • Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program by March 23, 2012
