Financial Support and Awards

Queen's School of Business provides PhD students with competitive levels of financial support during the first four years of the doctoral program.

PhD students entering the program in the fall of 2010 receive a minimum of $25,000 per year for four years, renewed each year based on full-time status and satisfactory progression through the program. Students are also eligible for an additional $1,650 per year to attend or present at a conference.

International students receive additional funding of $5,000 per year in the form of an international tuition award while registered as a full-time, active student in the first four years of the PhD program. This effectively reduces the international tuition fees closer to the level paid by students with Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.

All applicants to the PhD and MSc programs whose applications are complete and accepted before March 1 are automatically considered for nomination for University fellowships. PhD students are eligible to receive additional funding through provincial and national fellowships, research and/or teaching assistantships, as well as awards and bursaries. Students who have successfully passed their comprehensive examination may also apply to teach an undergraduate course.

All domestic students thinking of applying to the PhD program are encouraged to consider applying for valuable external awards (such as SSHRC, Vanier and OGS) in the year prior to starting the program. Students do not have to be accepted prior to applying for these scholarships. Once in the program, students are expected to apply for all major external awards that they might be eligible for.

The overwhelming majority of students supplement their formal funding from the School with at least one of these sources. We strongly urge you to investigate all sources of support for which you may be eligible

Domestic tuition fees are currently $2,086 plus $33.33 for each of the 3 terms and can be confirmed on the website of the University Registrar. Additional student activity fees are described on the SGPS (Society of Graduate Professional Students) site.
