As a Queen’s doctoral student, you will select from seven areas of specialization.
Within our Accounting faculty group, there are 2 streams of research being pursued – Finance/Economics and Social Behavioural. As a result, the Accounting program is designed to enable students to pursue either stream. Each stream has its own course requirements. In addition to coursework, you work collaboratively with a faculty advisor to design and conduct research studies that enhance knowledge about Accounting and fulfill program requirements.
The QSB PhD program in Business Economics develops student expertise in advanced economic theory, quantitative analysis, and applied research. A major strength of our program is its emphasis on research related to business and management of organizations, including applications to innovation and entrepreneurship, industrial organization, competitive strategy, and international trade. The program prepares students for positions in academia and research institutions. During the first two years of the program, students complete the required course work and work closely with faculty and other students to familiarize themselves with various aspects of the research process. Students devote the remaining time in the program to writing their dissertation under close supervision, participating in seminars and workshops, and presenting their own work. Students with strong background in economics, science, or business are encouraged to apply.
The Phd program in finance introduces students to both classical and cutting edge research in all areas of the discipline including capital markets, corporate finance, asset pricing, financial institutions, and investments. Students spend the first two years of the program in courses designed to expose them to diverse financial research. At the same time, students will acquire the technical skills needed to conduct their own innovative research. Courses in economics and quantitative methods are important supplements to the core finance classes, giving students a strong foundation for embarking on either theoretical or empirical research.
Working closely with a faculty advisor, students will learn to formulate and answer meaningful research questions through their dissertation work. Insights from this work will have potential applications for both practitioners and academics. The primary goal of the program is to develop skilled researchers in finance, able to conduct independent research with integrity and communicate the implications of these results to a wide variety of audiences including students, researchers, and practitioners.
The MIS program provides a variety of courses on the management of information technology in organizations. In addition to coursework, students work collaboratively with a faculty advisor to design and conduct research studies that enhance knowledge about MIS and fulfill program requirements.
Management Science applies analytical approaches to problems of resource allocation and optimal decision-making in the real world. Drawing heavily on economics, mathematics, and behavioural science, we study model formulations for a variety of problem types, both deterministic and probabilistic, considering both static and dynamic approaches. Some of the material covered involves rigorous mathematical analysis, while other material focuses more on the application of mathematical methods to interesting problems for business, industry, government and other organizations.
We offer a wide variety of courses in Management Science, Operations Research, and Operations Management, exposing students to the latest methods, recent modeling approaches and current issues in the general areas of operations and decision making. Some of the fundamental courses are listed below:
Research in Management Science ranges from highly applied, immediate problem-solving work to longer-term, theoretical contributions with new analytical models and methodologies.
The Marketing program provides a variety of courses across the Marketing spectrum. In addition to coursework, students work collaboratively with a faculty advisor to design and conduct research studies that enhance knowledge about Marketing and fulfill program requirements. Examples include branding, brand management, consumer persuasion, consumer fairness, consumer activism, and the impact and use of social media.
The organizational behaviour (OB) program is designed for students interested in conducting applied research on people in organizational settings. Our program is designed to be accessible to students from a variety of academic backgrounds, such as social sciences, business, and education.
The OB area coursework exposes you to current research and theory from throughout the field. Courses cover the foundations of research and theory in organizational behaviour, psychological processes in organizations, interpersonal and group processes, multilevel dynamics, organizational theory, as well as specialized topics such as conflict and emotions.
In addition to coursework, you work collaboratively with a faculty advisor to design and conduct research studies that enhance knowledge about OB and fulfill program requirements.
Broadly speaking, faculty in the OB group are interested in how organizations and their members build, maintain, enhance, and damage professional connections and the effects these can have on individual, group, and organizational productivity and well-being. Some of our current research cover topics including occupational health and safety, the dynamics of trust, examination of institutions, traditions, workplace harassment, founders’ influence on their firms, culture and identity, cross-cultural management, women’s career issues, transformational leadership, pro-social and anti-social behaviours in teams, network and alliance dynamics, negotiations, situational constraints individual differences, and social entrepreneurship, among others.
